Happy Mother's Day
The reverence of the Black Mother has existed within Africa and the African diaspora for thousands of years.
In most African spiritual systems, the universe itself is considered to be a form of the Great Black Mother, since it’s constantly birthing new stars and other planetary bodies. Ma’at, Tawaret, Bastet and Neith are a few names of primordial Great Mothers.
The earth is also considered a form of the Great Black Mother in many African spiritual systems, because it births crops and plants and provides an environment that we use to survive. Oduduwa and Tiamut are a few names here.
And likewise, human Black Mothers are revered (especially in ancient times) because they are considered to be personifications of the universe on earth. This is why the Black Madonna is still worshipped in many countries around the world.
So as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we want to acknowledge all the Black mothers who are carrying on the divine role of bringing and rearing life into this world. None of us would be here without you, and we appreciate your work. Happy Mother’s Day!
